What is cost basis? Your cost basis is the average price you paid per coin across all your purchases. It determines your taxable gain or loss when you sell. If you sell above your cost basis, you have a capital gain; below, a capital loss. DCA investors who buy at multiple price points need to track their running average to know their true break-even price and unrealized P&L.
This calculator is for informational purposes only. Cost basis calculations shown use the average cost method. Your brokerage or exchange may use a different method (FIFO, LIFO, specific identification). Consult a tax professional for your actual cost basis and tax liability. Crypto prices used are illustrative only — enter your actual purchase prices.
How the crypto cost basis calculator works
Your average cost basis is the total amount you've invested divided by the total number of coins you hold. When you DCA — buying a fixed amount at regular intervals — each purchase adds to your total at a different price, moving your average cost up or down. This calculator tracks that running average across all your purchases and shows your unrealized profit or loss at the current price.
The break-even price is simply your average cost basis — the price at which your position becomes profitable. If you're DCA-ing during a downturn, each new purchase at a lower price reduces your average cost and brings your break-even price down, which is why continuing to invest during corrections is one of the core advantages of the DCA strategy.
How to use this calculator
- Enter each purchase — the price you paid and the amount of crypto you bought. Date is optional but helps track your history.
- Enter the current market price in the bottom right to see your unrealized P&L and how far above or below your cost basis the current price sits.
- Use the quick-select buttons to switch between BTC, ETH, SOL, or enter a custom token with your own price.
- The running average column shows how your cost basis moved with each purchase — useful for understanding the DCA effect on your entry price.
